As the flowers bloom and the season starts to change, bringing warmer weather, families want to get outside and have some fun! Oklahoma City has several parks located throughout the metro, but we are excited to let you know that one is being developed right by one of our communities – Lone Oak East.
According to Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation, a new park along Bluff Creek will be developed at NW 150th St. and Portland Ave., spanning all the way to NW 164th St. Guess what this park is going to be named? Have your guessed? Lone Oak Park is correct!
Now for a history lesson; have you ever wondered why everything in the area is named Lone Oak? This park and the land around it was originally owned by late oilman and philanthropist Dean A. McGee who named the land Lone Oak Farms. This name originated from a thriving lone oak tree that currently stands at 30 feet tall and spans to a width of 123 feet, dwarfing everything growing in a nearby creek bed.
McGee sold the land in 1999 to developer Lone Oak LLC. Most of the land has been developed except for an area located on the west border of the Lone Oak East community. According to The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City Councilman Mark Stonecipher said the developer agreed to donate the land to the city for a future park.
Doug Kupper, Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation director, said the donation of land in a rapidly developing part of Oklahoma City will not only preserve the natural tree but also parts of native Bluff Creek.
Lone Oak Park will be one of the only large parks to serve the Northwest Oklahoma City metro. The park is still at the developing stage but will hopefully open towards the end of the summer. The large lone oak tree is planned to the focusing point of the park.
“Getting this amount of land and the ability to preserve and protect an iconic creek bed, the Bluff Creek system, is very important to the park system,” Kupper said.
